1- Aftermaths of the Burning of Maungdaw Municipal Market, Rohingya Froced to Pay Extortion Money to Police
Maungdaw Municipal Market (with 95% of shops at the market owned by Rohingyas) was torched by Rakhine terrorists on 23rd November 2013 evening. Two shops (No. 2B-12 and No. 2B-11) were burnt down, whereas 20 other shops were looted by Rakhines from adjacent quarters. (The reports can be read here: An Elderly Rohingya Arrested in Relation to Fire Incident at Maungdaw Municipal Market)
Instead of finding out the culprits and punishing them according to the law, Maungdaw Police (from the station called Ngwe-Htaike) are now after the owners of the two shops burnt down on the said date. Police arrested the owner of the shop 2B-12 [hails from the village of Shujah (Shwezar)] on 24th November 2013 morning. They released him later having extorted Kyat 1.6 Millions. Again, on 13th December 2013, the police threatened to sue the owner of the shop 2B-11, U Osman [hails from the village mentioned above]. According to the police, the fire started from his shop and he would be prosecuted if he failed to pay an amount of Kyat 0.4 million to them (the police).
This is called double-victimization. On one hand, their shops were burnt down and on the other hand, they are forced to pay humungous amount of money to the police.
